Outstanding specifications at an incredible market beating price.

Wileyfox chose their name to invoke the thought of a cunning and quick-moving creature. One that appeals to many by being lean and attractive whilst existing with an air of mystery.

It's certainly a mystery how Wileyfox can provide the Spark X at this price!

Last year Wileyfox stunned the market with two very affordable and well-built smartphones. In 2016 they're looking to pull a similar trick with the Spark range. The Spark X is the largest of the options, with a 5.5 inch screen.

Aside from the bigger screen, the overall specification is the same as the Spark+, itself only ever so slightly cheaper. In order to maintain power, the Spark X has a much larger 3,000 mAh removable battery.

This means the Spark X has a great resolution Samsung 13MP camera (with an 8MP selfie camera), 16 GB of storage and 2 GB of RAM. It's a fairly basic specifcation but more than powerful enough to keep the average person ticking over all day.

Cyanogen OS

Wileyfox have continued to place faith in the CyangoenOS system to power their phones.

The newest CyanogenOS 13.1 is based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow and includes a number of Android's newest key features such as advanced power management, merging external storage and permissions structure.

CyanogenOS differs from Android by not limiting access to certain aspects of the operating system and also allowing for high levels of customisation - a far cry from heavily locked down versions of Android installed on phones from more well-known manufacturers such as Samsung, Sony, HTC and LG.

It also presents more options than the recent versions of Google's own stock Android, which many users have said is now far more restrictive than the original intentions ever were.

Cyanogen focusses on user customisation, performance and security.

Themes & Customisation

By using the Cyanogen Theme engine, you can quickly change the look and feel of the phone. You can also customise certain aspects of each Theme.

Hundreds of themes are available to download in the Cyanogen gallery - some paid for and some free - with more added every week. Theme Chooser lets you mix and match parts of any theme you have downloaded to make a hybrid.

Cyanogen OS even allows you to change the interaction with the device. You can change the response to actions such as Long Press, Tap or Double Tap and create your own shortcuts from gestures inputted on the lockscreen.

Many manufacturers create software for a single phone then rarely update it.

Cyanogen has been developed and worked on daily for well over 5 years. The system has been optimised by skilled and passionate developers whose goal is to create something they would be happy to use every day.

One of the most obvious positives from this work is increased battery life, along with the ability for you, as the user, to adjust & modify battery use to individual apps to eke out extra hours if necessary.

Built in to the Cyanogen system is Privacy Guard. This app gives you deep control over the system features that other applications can access.

This builds on from Android 6.0's updates to the system permissions. With these an app will always ask before it can access a system feature for the first time. Privacy Guard grants you the ability to revoke access to system features, at any time, to any app that is coded to ask for them.

PIN scramble is another simple security addition. If you use a PIN to lock your screen then this nifty feature randomises the number grid you put the PIN in on! With this people won't be able to reconstruct your PIN from smudges on the screen or watching where your fingers go.

Remote tracking and wiping of your phone is possible from your (optional) Cyanogen account.

You can use Protected Apps to lock certain applications behind a PIN or pattern lock, even after you're on the home screen. Put apps and shortcuts inside secure folders to avoid data leak or just plain, old-fashioned embarrassment if someone picks up your phone or you pass it to them.

Cyanogen OS also features a built-in Blacklist to permanently block numbers from ever calling or texting you again.

The Wileyfox Spark X screen is a large 5.5 inch HD IPS LCD panel at screen that provides 267 pixels per inch. This is a fully laminated display with high-quality colour reproduction with excellent viewing angles.

Dragontrail glass has also been used for the screen covering. More resistant to scratches and impacts than other competing technologies at this price point, the Spark X will stay looking good for longer, even if you like to carry it in a crowded bag!

The Spark X includes a 13 MP Samsung sensor on the back, with an 8MP sensor on the front for taking selfies and video-calls.

Cyanogen's camera app offers deep access to camera controls, so you can control burst mode, exposure time and compensation, white balance and many other features. Normally this level of control would be out of reach on cheaper smartphones.

Slow motion video recording is available, as well as the option to save your photos in uncompressed raw format (.DNG), perfect for those looking to complete highly detailed editing post-capture.
